Hufeisensiedlung Berlin Neukölln

The Horseshoe Settlement in the 1920s (1920er Jahre )

The Hufeisensiedlung was planned in the 1920s by Bruno Taut, Martin Wagner and Leberecht Migge. The Hufeisensiedlung was completed in 1926. The forecourt was laid out as a generous square area with different surfaces, solitary trees on the square and with hedges and lawns. A large flight of steps, illuminated by striking light columns, led to the pond with a roundel and the surrounding path. The large water surface of the pond extended to the roundel. The wide path running around the green area at the pond was accompanied by a low Berberis hedge and an animal garden band.

The open spaces of the Hufeisensiedlung before its redevelopment (2009 )

Before their renovation, the public green and open spaces were not in a condition suitable for preservation. On the forecourt on Fritz-reuter-Allee, the various path and square pavements were in a very poor condition. Subsequently installed raised beds were densely planted and made the forecourt confusing and dark. The trees on the square were no longer vital due to the filling in of the raised beds. The flight of steps at the forecourt to the pond had considerable damage, making only a small portion of it usable.
The horseshoe pond had a highly fluctuating and low water level and very dense cluttered riparian planting of wild shrubs and tall willows. The perimeter threshing floor path was heavily overgrown and more like a trail in width. The open spaces of the horseshoe settlement hardly offered any quality of stay.

The open spaces of the Hufeisensiedlung after its redevelopment (2012 )

From 2010 to 2012, the Henningsen landscape architects from Berlin reworked the grounds in accordance with the preservation order. The forecourt was renovated and planted with new trees. The raised beds here were demolished and the paving renewed according to the historical model. The wide staircase at the Voprlatz as well as the roundel at the pond and the pond itself were completely renewed. The pond received a new elaborate water technology and again its wide border of irises and cranesbill. The path around the pond was made into a wide path and separated from the adjacent lawn by a low hedge. New benches and wastebaskets were also installed.
