The term "harbour" is based on the idea of a natural or artificially protected shore area for ships. This need for protection, which is taken into account functionally in all harbours by surrounding breakwaters, gave rise to the design idea of the urban ensemble at the Braunsbedra pier.

Following the topography of the bay and the adjacent embankments, which are up to 23 m high, spaces with their different functions develop in the form of circular segments. The starting point is the waterfront promenade, which approaches the water in steps. It offers various recreational areas, ranging from sitting on the waterfront, to meadows for lounging and seating in front of and between the adjacent buildings for restaurants and cafes.

Thanks to the curved shape enclosing the harbour, it is present in many forms at every place and with every step. The 180 m long pier also seems to protect the harbour, slightly curved like another shell. From here, you can follow the hustle and bustle of the harbour and the entire bay from a sea perspective.
