As part of the expansion of the University of Applied Sciences Kempten, the outdoor facilities around the new building of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology are being designed.

After exceeding the spatial capacities of the University of Applied Sciences Kempten, the new building for the social and technical faculties was constructed (architectural office Karl Probst, Munich). In the open space, the inner courtyard and the perimeter around the new building were to be planned and executed. The order resulted from a competition (1st prize artist group "netzhalde", in cooperation with PSU). Open space design and art form an ideal synthesis.

The task was to design an attractive inner courtyard, taking into account all user interests.

Core features of the project:
■ Water basins and wooden decks invite to versatile leisure possibilities
■ Artificial lights break up the functional design, at the same time exaggerate it and give the inner courtyard a distinctive character during the day and at night
■ Different areas in the inner courtyard were assigned to different user groups and designed accordingly
■ The large-scale glass facades of the buildings enable the effect of the inner courtyard to be experienced also in the rooms
■ Straight-line path connections with large-format concrete slabs convey clear orientation and give the open spaces a special generosity.
