Planning a modern, environmentally conscious and attractive urban district near the centre of Shanghai.

The Pudong Municipality in Shanghai is planning to redesign the green spaces in the Beicai area. The green spaces of Beicai form one of eight green wedges that are intended to improve the climate in the centre of Shanghai.
The planning is to take into account the following four objectives:
- Development of an eco-city/ city in the forest.
- Representative "city of the future" (especially ecological, climatic and industrial)
- City of culture (modernity and history)
- Public recreation & ecological/environmental rehabilitation as the main functions of new planning

The results were presented in Shanghai at an interim presentation and a final presentation. The focus at the first presentation was on the conceptual approach to the topic. The focus at the final presentation on the design implementation of the concepts in the design area.

Work phase 1:
- Creation of a collection of materials on local conditions: Urban nature (green spaces, plants, animals), water bodies Settlement structure
- Analysis of axis connections in the study area (on: traffic, climate, culture) Potential and deficit analysis
- Research of national examples as models for the functional development of Beicai
- Development of conceptual approaches for the local promotion of nature, climate and leisure use

Work phase 2:
- Selection of priority areas for design in a team with SBA (M 1:2500)
- Overall design for the planning area (M 1:5000)
- Development of an optimal network structure of traffic, nature and climate in main and secondary axes
- Design planning of the green spaces in the focal areas using the concepts developed
- Advice on linking the planning objects

The concepts focus on the multifunctionality of green spaces as noise protection, visual protection, retention area, nature conservation area, climate-impacting area and public open space.

Depending on the results of the inventory analysis and the derived needs, spatial priorities were set. These areas were linked together with the urban development designs in a plan.
