On the site of the former Caroline colliery in the municipality of Holzwickede, a new building area has been created following the closure of the colliery and the redevelopment of the land. In the immediate vicinity are the retirement home "Neue Caroline" and the "Villa Pfiffikus", a meeting place for children, young people and families.

The "Caroline" - or more precisely: the Fördegerüst - was for many years an important identification object in and for the community. Against this background, the administration came up with the idea very early on to create a playground at this location that would be thematically linked to the mining history and be so attractive that it would develop a significance for the entire community beyond the immediate catchment area.

In 2008, the municipality of Holzwickede commissioned B.S.L. to develop a concept for such a playground. The result is a central play scaffold with a proud height of 11.30 m, which is based on the shape of the historical pit scaffold. There is even a rotating pulley. Through the "mouth hole", known to every child in Holzwickede, you can get to "underground". On different levels you can play with slides, a conveyor belt (sand instead of coal), sand and water tables and climbing possibilities. And of course there is a colliery railway with a loading station, which is connected to the former, huge goods station. A large part of the facility is accessible and usable barrier-free for wheelchair users.

A multifunctional play area with colored markings has been created from a barren asphalt surface, where you can play streetball or roller hockey or ride a unicycle. For the smaller ones, there is a bobby car ramp with an adjoining "kilometer".

The playground is framed by a fruit tree meadow with corresponding information offers and even a (supervised) beehive.

The inauguration of the playground took place in the course of the action "Schachtzeichen" in the context of the Capital of Culture Ruhr 2010.

Playground equipment in cooperation with Spielart GmbH, Laucha.
