"Conversion of a railway line into a cycle and footpath connection"

The development of the Rhenish Railway into a cycle and footpath connection offers the possibility of connecting city districts and, when fully developed, cities with each other along short routes. By maintaining and replacing the bridges over the intersecting streets, the bike path connection becomes an amazingly fast way to connect within the city. In addition to its trail function, the alignment offers the opportunity to expand as a linear park in many places. Recreational areas at the edge of the route and vantage points for better orientation in the urban area have now been created in the first extension section. The continuation and connection with the so-called GRUGA route has been established. The connection to Mülheim an der Ruhr main station and further to the bicycle lift at the Ruhr promenade can be used. At the beginning of 2019, the renovation of the Ruhr bridge should also be completed, then the connection to the new Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences will soon be usable.

The first section from the university quarter, past the new Niederfeldsee lake to the Borbeck cycle path connection shortly after the Schölerpad road and the former Altendorf railway station was constructed as a generous 5.00 m wide route paved with asphalt. The continuation, in the direction of the city limits of Mülheim an der Ruhr (initially the district of Heißen), up to the Kaldenhoverbaum junction at the terraced cemetery as a 3.50 m wide water-bound path. The freshly planted, very straight-growing birches ("Zwitsers Glorie") with light bark color stand out well from the surrounding vegetation.

Connecting road to Borbeck

Work will soon begin on the connecting road of the cycle path to Borbeck station. The necessary clearing for ramps and path areas took place by the end of February 2013, and the bridge renovations at Wüstenhöferstraße and Kampstraße are nearing completion. The safety fence along the S-Bahn to Borbeck has been erected so that the path extension can take place. From mid-April 2013, work will begin on the path extension and the construction of all necessary works and the route will link up with the Rheinische Bahn cycle path in the Schölerpad area. The fast connection between the Essen-Borbeck district and Essen city centre can then be used from summer 2013.
