A new hotspot for children and young people has been opened on the site in front of the old signal box, next to the newly planned police station. With its unique combination, the play and sports park offers something for everyone. On 3600 m², there is a street skate park, pool with concrete coping, calisthenics facility, basketball court, beach handball court and a climbing facility within the signal box. The park is accessible to all thanks to barrier-free access, and in addition to two entrances and a convenient connection to the train station and Gummersbach campus, the park also has its own parking spaces.

The Gummersbach play and sports park is open!

The official opening of the play and sports park by the Gummersbach city and development company took place on July 14. Despite the changeable weather, many visitors and athletes came. The skate park was quickly taken over by skaters, BMXers and scooter riders, who tested out their skills and the possibilities on the new surface. The women's teams from VfL Gummersbach and SSV Marienheide showed off their skills on the beach handball court. During the opening, visitors were able to test themselves on the climbing wall in the old signal box under the supervision of the German Alpine Association DAV, or design the walls in the graffiti workshop.

The play and sports park was funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and serves as an example and model for future multifunctional areas by linking and bringing together the many sports areas. A special feature of the sports park is the street skate park area, which consists of a combination of large-format slabs in flat and in-situ concrete skate elements. The street area features elements such as ledges, rails and centerpieces. Skaters ride between a bank with a table and a transition with a bowl area. There are steel copings on the transitions, while the pool at ground level in the street park is equipped with pool copings. The pool was designed together with Dietsche O.M.S.A. Pools.
