Osterstraße is one of the most important shopping streets in Hamburg and is therefore the local shopping centre for the district of Eimsbüttel and beyond.
The redesign has further strengthened this character and given pedestrians a higher priority. Pavement islands in the middle of the lanes help pedestrians to change sides safely. By shifting the bike lanes to the street, the cycling relationship towards the city center was strengthened. Particularly in the first construction section between Schulweg and Heußweg, great importance was attached to preserving the old and characteristic tree populations. The locations were visually and functionally significantly upgraded. In the second construction phase, two mini roundabouts were realised, which ensure that traffic is slowed down but still flows smoothly. Right from the start of planning, the citizens were intensively involved and were able to express their wishes and doubts in citizen participation meetings and thus actively participate in the redesign. The constant exchange and contact with the residents and interest groups continued throughout the entire planning and construction phase, so that most of the doubters could ultimately be convinced of the success of the Osterstraße conversion project.
