Merzenich is a future-oriented municipality that actively tackles the challenges of demographic and structural change without wanting to forfeit the advantages of a village character. The municipality lacks an identity-forming square that is suitable for public events as well as an attractive green space with a high quality of stay. The design succeeds in uniting both with the help of the spatial division into two parts, which divides the entire open space into a green and a stone area.

The playable area of the square is given a flat surface, which is "punched" into the existing slope of the square. The resulting elevations will be lined with seating steps and stairs. The drainage will be changed for ecological reasons: In the future, rainwater will be treated in a basin with reed plants and seating edges in the west of the square and fed into the ground for infiltration.

Over the tectonic fault zone, a grid of roof-shaped plane trees is laid out, which take up the character of a garden. A meeting place for different age groups is to be created here, with shaded seating as well as activity areas.
