CONCEPT
In order to strengthen cycling in Hamburg, the Free and Hanseatic City has decided to renew the cycling facilities around the Binnenalster. The Ballindamm, the Jungfernstieg and the Neue Jungfernstieg are mainly affected. The aim of the new planning is an attractive design and significant increase in the areas for pedestrian and bicycle traffic around the Binnenalster.

The design concept envisages a high-quality, uniform material composition for streets, pavements and edgings. On the Alster side, pedestrians can walk on an openly designed promenade and enjoy the view of the Alster by thinning out the shrubs between the trees and the widened area.

DESIGN
In coordination with the urban planning and the district office Hamburg Mitte, a high-quality granite stone in the format 30x60x10 cm is used for the sidewalks and 30x15x12 cm for the parking stalls. The natural stone slabs are laid flush from the Hamburg edge set by the district office to the facades, as well as for the promenade along the Alster. Benches and chairs made of steel with a wooden overlay were installed as seating elements. Anthracite-coloured bicycle racks, litter bins and bollards blend into the overall appearance of the city. New tree plantings, Tilia cordata, provide shade in summer and ensure a pleasant urban climate.
