The approximately 210-hectare Wartenberg Landscape Park is an important stepping stone of the Barnimer Feldmark Regional Park. The functioning coexistence of agriculture, nature conservation and recreation in the immediate vicinity of the large Wartenberg housing estate make it today a model project for dealing with areas close to the city.
The goal after reunification was to establish a fourth local recreation area in the northeast of Berlin in the form of the Barnimer Feldmark Regional Park. The landscape here was not characterized by forests, lakes or other concise structures, but by its mere extension of field structures.
It was therefore sought a recreational landscape of a new type. For this purpose, the Senate of Berlin in 2001 launched a Europe-wide landscape planning competition.
The characteristic openness should be preserved in the design of the park. The hard edge of the extremely dense large housing estate was juxtaposed with a spatially richly structured landscape, which does not restrict the expanse but on the contrary constantly stages new views and panoramas. Only through the fissuring and differentiation, spaces were created in which people feel comfortable and which now allow a variety of uses.
Since 2001, the park has been realized step by step. After structural measures such as the development, the afforestation of about 50 hectares of forest and the renaturation of two water ditches, above all new action offers were realized. A skating circuit was inaugurated in 2006, followed by "play trapezes" in 2007, which were designed as nature-oriented playgrounds with local children. A popular destination is the pasture of Scottish Highland cattle, which are cared for by the Malchow Nature Conservation Station.
The Hechtgraben, which crosses the site, has been transformed into a near-natural watercourse over its entire length of approx. 3.5 km from its source in the east to its mouth in Lake Malchow and today forms an attractive green link.
