A high structural richness, such as shallow banks, steep walls, gravel islands in the stream bed, deep pools, fallen trees, sturgeon, site-appropriate riparian woody plants with branched roots, a mosaic of fast and slow flowing stream sections and much more, are characteristic of near-natural flowing waters.
The European Water Framework Directive (EC-WFD) requires surface water bodies, i.e. still and flowing waters, to achieve a "good ecological status" - i.e. an appearance as close to nature as possible - by 2015. This target is measured by the quality components fish, macrozoobenthos (small organisms), macrophytes/phytobenthos and phytoplankton (aquatic plants/algae).
Valuable assistance is provided here by the so-called implementation concept (UK) for hydromorphological measures, an important planning step in order to move from the programme of measures (programmatic) to the implementation of measures (concrete project).
In the municipality of Tiefenbach near Landshut, the measures could be implemented in January 2014, so that at the same time a continuity of the watercourse from the mouth into the Isar Canal through the local area to the south almost to the source area near Zweikirchen is given again.
The tendering of the measures was carried out by the commissioned engineering office within the framework of the watercourse maintenance measures of the Gewässerzweckverbandes in the district of Landshut. The office Linke Kerling was commissioned to ensure a near-natural design with a separate ecological construction management.
