Landscape Park Rudow-Altglienicke Meadow landscape on the former border strip

On the Wall strip between the Berlin districts of Rudow (Berlin-West) and Altglienicke (Berlin-East), a landscape park of approx. 64 hectares has been created, which is based on an ambitious ecological concept. The guiding principle is an extensive meadow landscape that links the districts of Rudow and Altglienicke, which were separated for decades, and creates a connection to the Brandenburg cultural landscape.

The new park is due to the construction of the BAB 113 motorway (new). To compensate for unavoidable encroachments on nature and the landscape, a spacious and extensively structured park landscape has been created that opens up a variety of forms of recreational use to visitors. The main path - the backbone of the entire park - is part of the Berlin Wall Trail.

Although the highway runs through it for 2.5 km, the park is perceived as a large, unfragmented recreational landscape largely shielded from the effects of road traffic. This is ensured by two tunnels and a sunken trough section between them.

The guiding principle is an extensive meadow landscape that links the districts of Rudow and Altglienicke, which have been separated for decades, and creates a connection to the Brandenburg cultural landscape. Loosely distributed groups of trees stand on the "carpet" of the extensive meadow landscape. Various leading tree species and meadow types create a varied landscape. Puddles, pastures and meadow orchards allow the Brandenburg field marsh to "flow" into the park from the south.

Topographically shaped, intensively designed park areas are laid out on top of the extensive park landscape in a clod-like manner. Lowered lawns offer a variety of opportunities for exercise and sport. In this way, the pressure of use is absorbed and sensitive areas are spared.

The 4.5 m wide main path traverses the park from Rudower Straße to the Berlin-Brandenburg state border in an elegant curve over a length of 2.1 km. Smooth asphalt invites skating and cycling, and the width of the path ensures that walkers and joggers still feel safe.

Park pointers with asymmetrical path profiles and "inlaid" planting strips are the most important connections between the main path and adjacent residential neighborhoods. Narrow paths provide access to remote parts of the park and allow for shortcuts. They usually have a turf surface. Where durability is required, they are made of flagstones.
