The schoolyard of the Mahlsdorfer Elementary School is being redesigned through a variety of measures. New gymnasium and the mobile classrooms are integrated into the outdoor space and thus result in a unified appearance.
The courtyard is designed as an island concept. These islands will be provided with lawns, sand or fall protection gravel. Areas divided by age groups will be equipped with age-appropriate playground equipment. Existing trees will be largely preserved and new trees will be planted. Grass islands serve as recreation and play areas, partly in the shade of the trees. Lawns are supplemented by solitary shrubs, with flowering shrubs in the light as well as shade-tolerant small shrubs under the trees. Edge edgings of the islands partly consist of concrete benches with wooden seating surfaces. Existing benches and table combinations will be refurbished and reinstalled. The same is true for existing pavers, which will find new use in perimeter areas.
Main areas of the schoolyard will be finished in high infiltration pavers, some colored to highlight playing fields. Lawn islands and planting will maintain the green character of the courtyard, as well as provide drainage along with the paving.
