The city's two town halls will form the striking cornerstones of the space, which is characterized by the historic house facades and is intended to enhance the center as a market square.
Spatially, the square is defined to the north by the Gothic town hall as well as by views through the facades of Rosengasse and Luitpoldgasse.
The Spitaltor marks the southern entrance to the city center via a narrow alley, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße.
Only at the corner of the New Town Hall does the strongly north-south sloping market square widen.
The alley on Wied is given the function of an exit to the square for motorized traffic.
Between the two town halls and the Spitalturm tower, interesting lines of sight are opened up that are to be kept free of parking.
The facades of Rosenstrasse and Luitpoldstrasse can also be perceived as the northern edges of the square.
Functions of the square
- The western shopping area enjoys morning sun and is therefore particularly suitable for the weekly market in the morning.
It is of overriding importance as a historic link to Rosengasse. In future, pedestrian and bicycle traffic in a north-south direction will play a central role here.
The east side of the square is sunny in the afternoons and is suitable for outdoor dining and seating. The eastern passageway to Luitpoldstraße can serve as a temporary exit for market suppliers/fire brigade in future. The current location of the parking spaces on the east side of the square will be retained.
The southern and eastern apron of the Gothic town hall is suitable as a sunny seating and lounge area around the fountain at lunchtime and in the afternoon.
The northern surroundings of the new town hall with flagpoles are to be seen as a representative apron for the administration and traffic area for through traffic.
