The "Jardins surprises" were created in 2011 in Bingen on the Rhine as an original interim use. Ten extraordinary garden productions from the Festival International des Jardins in Chaumont-sur-Loire (2008-2010) were reconstructed on the banks of the Rhine, true to the original. Among them was the German garden "La couleur des éléments" by STEFAN LAPORT from 2009.

Since 2008, a new garden city has been under construction in Bingen on the site of the former state garden show directly on the banks of the Rhine. Until the completion of the buildings one wanted to offer the visitors of the harbor park once again a very special highlight in the form of an interim use.
With a view of the Niederwald Monument, which was once built from enemy cannonballs from the Franco-German War, the "Jardins surprises" (Surprise Gardens) were organized as a sign of European international understanding. The gardens of Chaumont-sur-Loire, located at the southern entrance to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site, also presented themselves at their best as an external BUGA project, a project of the Rhineland-Palatinate Summer of Culture and a participant in the Rhineland-Palatinate 2012 Architectural Tours. Thousands of visitors took advantage of this attractive offer to admire 7 French and 1 garden production each from Italy, Holland and Germany. Due to the very good response, the city of Bingen decided to extend the event by one year until 2012. Already in 2013, some of the gardens will be gone...
