Through the merger of the cities of Bonn, Bad Godesberg and Beul in 1969, the Rhine floodplains became the center of the new capital Bonn.
The Rhine with its banks and flood zones is spatially formative. The overall space of the park, formed by the valley basin, is divided into spaces that flow into one another.
The illusion of vastness and great distance from urban development was created with skilful spatial planting and ground modelling.
A design principle of the landscape park:
The park is divided into different zones: from the riverbank zone of the Rhine to the architecturally designed higher entrance area.
The Auensee emphasises the original river landscape along the Rhine. The two river terraces of the Rhine with the edge of the slope between the lower terrace and the youngest terrace are made visible and experienceable by a large earthwork elevated as a viewing terrace.
The viewing terrace is a popular walkway and has a variety of uses such as the rose garden, the garden for the blind, children's playgrounds, the waterfall, two restaurants, as well as planting that varies towards the floodplain.
The earth structure is shaped in correspondence to the opposite hill range of the Siebengebirge.
The traffic structures, in particular the motorway, which was built across the Rhine and through the Rheinauenpark, were cleverly integrated into the terrain.
With the Rheinauenpark, the newly created "green center" of Bonn, further measures were planned by us, which served to integrate the park, the neighborhoods and the coalescence of the various districts.
Examples of this are the merging of the Rhine promenades of Bonn and Godesberg and of Beul Oberkassel, as well as the green connections on the right and left bank of the Rhine to the surrounding villages on the Venusberg and Ennert.

Listed buildings:
On the basis of the expert opinion of the LVR Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in the Rhineland of 17.10.2014, the district government of Cologne has the Rhine floodplain park on the right and left bank of the Rhine 2017 under monument protection.

Planting:
In accordance with the flood zones of the Rhine and following the plant sociological zones, the following leading species of planting are selected:
- for the softwood floodplain:willow and poplar
- for the hardwood floodplain: oak, maple, ash, elm and hornbeam
- for the beech floodplain: Beech, Lime, Sycamore, Ash and Maple
- for the mixed zone to the cityPlane, Chestnut, Black Locust, Cedar, Sweet Chestnut, Liriodendron
and other non-"native" woody plants that only existed in the Bonn area before the Ice Age.
