In the western ring road in Cologne in the areas of Hohenstaufenring, Habsburgerring, Rudolfplatz, Hahnentor, Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring, the entire street space with the side streets leading into it had to be redesigned after the construction of the underground (open construction method).
Using classic urban design methods, an optimal solution for traffic and pedestrians was achieved with tall avenue trees, valuable paving and wide footpaths, based on the historic boulevard character - a sequence of streets and squares.
The Ringstraße was restored as an urban space and placed in front of the old town as a pedestrian-friendly boulevard.
