The Neu-Riem district is located at the former airport site in the east of Munich. With its 70ha, the new Munich Trade Fair Centre is an important part of the Neu-Riem district.
The trade fair grounds are integrated into the landscape planning concept of the new district by means of superordinate green structures.
Only tree species that also occur in the site-typical vegetation were essentially used for ecological networking. Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, Acer pseudoplatanus, Carpinus betulus , Pinus sylvestris.
In the south, the fair borders the full length of the 80m wide green space of Willy-Brandt-Allee between the East and West subway stations. The east-west axis was planned "architecturally-urban" and planted with tall avenue trees with a crown approach of 4m: Acer platanoides, Acer pseudoplatanus, Platanus acerifolia and Tilia cordata.

Ecological aspects

In 1992, Dipl.-Ing. Irene Burkhardt was commissioned to carry out an environmental impact study to investigate the likely environmental effects on the exhibition grounds. The majority of the recommendations from this study were incorporated into the open space planning.

The Neu-Riem Mitte trade fair apron

Through the 1st prize in the "Neu Riem Mitte" urban and landscape planning ideas competition 1. Stage, we were able to design the open spaces of the trade fair and the trade fair apron into a spacious urban park for the new district of Riem.
The western trade fair apron is also the central entrance area and the main access for the trade fair city. The centre of the public space and the biggest attraction is the 25,000m² lake area. The lake shore is accompanied by a circular path and the seating areas there are a popular place to stay.
The lake is partially planted with water lilies and reeds. It is fed by rainwater from the roofs of the fairgrounds and by groundwater. The 5m high fountains in the lake are colourfully illuminated at night.
The northern part acts as a seepage area for rainwater from the fair roofs.
The water surface is stepped down to the south to the mezzanine level of the subway. A generous, flat ramp leads from the subway station directly to the main entrance of the fair.
The planting of the fair apron consists of a succession of tall trees and clipped hedges that emphasize specific situations. Columnar oaks accompany the entrance to the fair across the lake. The columnar poplar accentuates the main entrance, high-trunked plane trees stand at the guest garden of the lake, weeping willows hang their branches into the water. The main access road into Messestadt, Olof-Palme-Strasse, is planted with high-stemmed lime trees.

Atrium

The atrium is the central 650m long and 35m wide interior space of the fair. Water features, seating areas, picturesquely grown individual trees and low-cut hedges divide the length.
In contrast to the landscaped perimeter planting of the exhibition grounds with vegetation typical of the site, the atrium was planted with partly rare flowering and fragrant tree species such as Ailanthus altissima, Paulownia tomentosa, Suffora japonica, Liriodendron tulipifera, white- and red-flowered chestnuts and acacias. The atrium is an island of tranquility, a recreational space and a space designed for lingering. It offers visitors a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the trade fair. The geometric longitudinal space of the green area is divided by hedge structures and loose groups of trees.
The exterior walls of the new exhibition halls are partially covered with climbing plants. The flat roofs of the connecting buildings are designed as "green roofs".
