The planning area in the Oberhausen district of Alstaden comprises the Ruhrpark, laid out in 1920 in the style of an English landscape garden, as well as a wetland biotope located approx. 1 km west of the park and the slag heap to the east of the park. Both areas are connected by the Ruhr dyke. Parts of the Ruhr dyke are part of the well-known Ruhr Valley cycle path.

The city of Oberhausen is planning to redesign the park as part of the IGA 2027. With the involvement and participation of users and stakeholders, such as the "Alstadener Bügerring", a status analysis and then the structural concept were developed. 10 building blocks enhance the local recreation area, promote biodiversity and allow it to be experienced. The plan was presented to the public at the beginning of 2022. Nature conservation and landscape planning measures for ecological optimization are recommended for the Ruhr, the Ruhr pond, the Ruhr meadows, old woodland and the Alstaden slag heap wetland. At the same time, advice is given on how to make the park more attractive for play, sport and exercise. Another important element is mobility in this area. The networking of the old and newly created areas creates a future-oriented traffic area.

The first component "Wetland experience laboratory at the Alstaden slagheap" - construction of an observation walkway with a bird observation wall, including information elements and nesting facilities for endangered bird species - could be completed by the end of 2023.
