Redesign of the outdoor facilities of a home for the disabled

OUTDOOR SITUATION

The garden area around the residential building was hardly usable for the residents and offered little quality of stay. Only two terraces offered space to sit in front of the group rooms. Dense woody plantings to the north made this part of the garden very dark. In addition, there was a lack of path paving. The existing lawn and mulch areas were not walkable or drivable for many of the residents. With the construction of new balconies/stairs for the upper floor, the outdoor areas were also to be redesigned.

DESIGN

During the planning process, the wishes of the residents were incorporated and integrated into the new design as far as possible. It was important to make the entire garden barrier-free for all residents to use. As a new center and meeting place, a fire and barbecue area is to be created. Benches provide sufficient seating and also leave room for wheelchair users. The space will be complemented by a garden house with a covered seating area, a raised herb bed and areas for leisure activities such as streetball, darts or table tennis. Terraces in front of the group rooms and a seating area also invite you to linger. Around the building runs a continuous paving and connects all areas with each other.
The entrance area and the parking spaces remained largely intact and was redesigned only in some places. The garbage cans were enclosed with a cut hedge to form a separate garbage area. The old bicycle shelter was replaced with a new one and also provided with a surrounding hedge planting. Perennial beds and a bench green the building entrance.
