A new quarter is being created in Hamburg's city centre: the Stadthöfe quarter. The entire building complex between Neuer Wall and Große Bleichen will be renovated and converted in the coming years. The historic ensemble of buildings, built between 1888 and 1916, most recently housed the Department of Urban Development and the Environment (BSU). The overall urban planning/structural design concept was developed by David Chipperfield Architects, Kuehn Malvezzi Architects and Stephen Williams Associates. The design concept of the city courtyards and the connecting passages was created by arbos Freiraumplanung. A mixed use concept provides space for retail, gastronomy, residential, hotel and office space. The facades of the listed buildings will be largely preserved and reconstructed. The conversion concept provides for a connection of the five inner courtyards and thus creates new routes between the Stadthausbrücke, the Grosse Bleichen and the Neuer Wall. The design and use are intended to fill the courtyards with new life. Small-scale retail and gastronomy areas are planned, some of which will be roofed over.
